The first, original, and still considered to be the best installment in the Devil May Cry video game series by some fans. First believed to be a continuation of the Resident Evil series, in the middle of production was changed to the brand new series; Devil May Cry, with the new star being Dante: the half-devil, half-human. The game became popular and was followed up by 3 sequels, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3 (actually a prequel, storyline-wise) and Devil May Cry 4.
- Dante - Dante is the main character in this game. He is very comical, and has mysterious demon powers that he doesn't know much about. He works in his own company "Devil May Cry", where he goes out and takes down demons. He doesn't know much about his past and goes to Mallet Island to learn more about it. He eventually finds out that he is the son of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and that this is where his demonic powers come from. His quest is to defeat one of the demons that his father was able to lock away, named Mundus.
- Trish - A mysterious young woman who takes Dante to Mallet Island to help defeat Mundus. She resembles the looks of Dante's Mother, Eva, which helps in the cause of getting Dante to go to Mallet Island. She joins Dante in his quest to defeat Mundus. But nobody knows what is really going on with this girl.
- Mundus - The ruler of the Underworld and the leader of demons in this game, is the main bad guy in Devil May Cry 1. Mundus is the one that Dante's father, Sparda, locked away in the Underworld. During this process Mundus was able to defeat both Dante's Mother and Father, and take their other son, Vergil (learn more about him in Devil May Cry 3), who ends up being Nelo Angelo in this game, for his own.
- Nelo Angelo - This is Dante's twin brother that Mundus took under control. He is very similar to Dante in his techniques, as he fights with a sword as well. I suggest sticking with Ifrit as it dishes out more power, but Alastor can be used as well to deal damage. But you have to keep moving to prevent him from hitting you, and then slashing and beating away.
