Devil May Cry 4 takes place between Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2. The story follows the series' main character Dante and newcomer to the series Nero as they try to take down the High Priest of the Order of the Sword, Sanctus. Characters from previous games such as Lady and Trish make small appearances along with new ones such as Kyrie (Nero's love interest), Credo and Agnus.

Nero's quest involves him being betrayed by the Order of the Sword and attempting to rescue his love interest Kyrie, who's been captured by Agnus and Sanctus. Dante's quest is to retrieve the sword Yamato which once belonged to his brother Vergil and was also captured by Agnus. Through-out the game both Nero and Dante will face the same bosses, they are Berial, Bael & Dagon and Echidna. There are also battles between Nero and Credo as well as Dante and Agnus, Dante and Nero also battle a few times before finally teaming up to take down The Saviour.
